Duomo di Firenze

Florence’s most famous building and one of the biggest cathedral’s in the world, the Duomo or the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore is a breathtaking gothic building. The cathedral was built on the site of the seventh century church of Santa Reparata, the remains can be seen within the crypt. The cathedral we see today is the result of 170 years of work.

The first stone of the facade was laid on September 8, 1296, under the direction of Arnolfo di Cambio who, in the same period, oversaw the construction of Santa Croce and Palazzo delIa Signoria. The eastern chapels were finished in the early 1400’s. The dome, which is often climbed up by tourists for one of the best views overlooking all of Florence, was constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi. It was completed in just 16 years, from 1418 to 1434. The last part of Santa Maria del Fiore to be built was the facade, done between 1871 and 1887 by Emilio De Fabris, in a neo-gothic style reminiscent of the gothic decoration of the Bell Tower and side portals of the cathedral.

People come around the world to Florence to see the captivating detailed architecture of this building. This is definitely something you can’t miss when you visit this incredible city.
