The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella was founded during the first half of the 13th century by the monks of the Dominican Order. It is now one of the most important points of religion and art in Italy. The name of Santa Maria Novella attracted famous artists such as Giotto, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, and many others during the Middle Ages and Renaissance period.

The complex of Santa Maria Novella is both a religious center and a museum. It’s current form seeks to bring together both functions for both the people of Florence and tourists. If you would like to attend religious services, it is free; however, during this time, the museum side of the facility is closed.

Santa Maria Novella is one of the places where the history of Italian art was made and where some of the most brilliant artistic exponents were trained. Artwork here includes the facade, Filippo Strozzi Chapel, and Masaccio’s Holy Trinity just to name a few.

Thanks to an agreement between the Interior Ministry’s Religious Buildings Fund and the Municipality of Florence, as of 10 November 2012 the monumental complex of Santa Maria Novella can be visited with a single ticket admitting the public to both theBasilica and the Cloisters.

Unfortunately, there is no student discount here.
