The Chiesa di Ognissanti, the “Church of All Saints”, is a Franciscan church located in Piazza di Ognissanti. The church was founded by the order of the Umiliati and was dedicated to all saints and martyrs. The building was originally completed in the 1250’s but was almost completely rebuilt in 1627 by architect Bartolomeo Pettirossi in a Baroque style.

A decade later, a new façade was designed and constructed using designs by Matteo Nigetti. The Chiesa di Ognissanti was one of the first examples of Baroque in Florence during a period dominanted by Renaissance architecture.

Despite the beautiful Baroque facade, once again the true treasures are to be found inside this church. Some of Florence’s and in fact Italy’s most celebrated artists painted frescoes for Ognissanti. The Madonna and Child with Angels by Giotto was painted for the high altar. Frescoes by Ghirlandaio and Botticelli can be found in the nave. Botticelli was buired in the church to be close to his beloved Simonetta Vespucci. And to top it off, Ghirlandaio is also responsible for the Last Supper fresco in the refectory which is now a museum.

Quite a resume for a small church that is off the beaten tourist track! And it is free.
