The Oltrarno, meaning Oltre dell’Arno or Beyond the Arno River, is the way that we refer to the area on the south side of the river. Recently, the Oltrarno was listed in an article by Lonely Planet as one of the “10 of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods to visit right now“. It has a completely different vibe to the hectic more touristed Duomo side of the river and is well worth a visit.

The heart of the Oltrarno is Piazza Santo Spirito characterized by its delightfully simple church and by its hip piazza filled with restaurants, bars and people just hanging out.

Ristorante Ricchi is one of these restaurants, with a big outdoor dining space giving you great views of the church and the locals lollying about doing their thing. They are open all day from breakfast so it is a great place to grab a cappuccino on the way to class. Their dinner menu is divided into Mare (seafood), Terra (land), Pizza and Salads. Tuscany traditionally has very meaty menus so this is a great place for seafood lovers. Options include seared tuna steak, fried mixed seafood with spaghetti fries, tuna tartare, pasta with clams, just to name a few.

Lunch: 12 noon to 3:00pm
Dinner: 7:00pm to 11:00pm

Location, location, location. For the winter they have a cosy inside dining area but in the Summer and Spring we love eating outside in the square. I almost always order an appetizer and then the mixed fried seafood, which is big enough to share. Ordering the house wine keeps the overall price of your meal reasonable. It is a place where you can stop by for a quick pizza or pasta or completely ball out on a multiple course meal.
