San Miniato Florence Italy

San Miniato Al Monte

San Miniato Al Monte is also located at one of the highest points in the city of Florence. Spend your day seeing this beautiful church, rich in history and beauty.

In the center of the nave to see that it is dominated by the beautiful, freestanding Cappella del Crocefisso (Chapel of the Crucifix). It was designed by Michelozzo and dates back to 1448. It’s decorated with panels that are thought to be painted by Agnolo Gaddi.

Witness the early feature of a chorus raised on a platform above the large crypt. This contains a magnificent Romanesque pulpit and screen made in 1207. It depicts the same subject as that on the facade and was most likely created by the same unknown artist. The crypt is the oldest part of the San Miniato Al Monte. It’s thought that the high altar contains the bones of St Minias himself.

Even better is that down, behind the back of the church, there are beautiful mosaics. For just one euro, you can choose to illuminate the mosaic to see its beauty in its entirety.

Finally, make sure you come by in the afternoon to hear the monks chant. They chant around the time of sunset so make sure you are there in time to hear it!
