Known as the first Renaissance building erected in Florence, the Medici Riccardi Palace was built by Michelozzo for Cosimo the Elder between 1444 and 1462. The residence belonged to the Medici’s until Cosimo I, after the cadet branches of the dynasty lived there. Then in 1659 the Riccardi family purchased the palace passing it down to the Lorraine family at the beginning of the 19th century.

The palace can be characterized by its clearly defined and rusticated floors along with a huge cornice crowning the roofline. It stands out for the arched windows formed along its front and the partially closed loggia fixed on the corner of the building.

The procession detailed on the walls of the Cappella di Palazzo Medici Riccardi is inspired by a specific historical event which is the parade that took place on the occasion of the Council of Florence during the reunification between the Byzantine and the Western Church was ratified. You will find the Fresco to be full of portraits of many Italian lords and intellectuals.
