The Duomo di Firenze was designed in the Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, and began construction in 1296. The famous dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, and is the largest brick dome ever constructed. After Di Cambio died in 1310, construction slowed down until 1334 when Giotto was appointed to finish his work. Before his death in 1337, Giotto was able to complete the campanile. Work resumed in 1349 under multiple architects and by 1418, only the dome was incomplete but was finished by 1436. The marble exterior, designed by Emilio De Fabris, was not completed until 1887.

The cathedral is located in Piazza del Duomo, the historic center of Florence, and includes the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile. These three building are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church is also known for its forty-four stained glass windows, which in the 14th and 15th century, was a quantity never before seen in a single church.

The Duomo is one of the most recognizeable symbols of Florence and one of its most important monuments. Aside from visiting the inside of the Cathedral we highly recommend visiting the Grand Museo del Duomo which includes climbing the Dome, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery and the Crypt under the Cathedral.
