The owners, Marcus and Sascha, founded Wombat’s in 1998, nearly ten years after they had the crazy idea while Backpacking around Australia together. In 1999, they opened their first hostel in Vienna and now Wombat’s hostels can be found in Berlin, London, Budapest, Munich and coming soon in Venice too (2019).

Experience

The Wombat’s team scored a wonderful building for their Budapest Hostel. Originally built in 1840, they maintained the original facade of the buidling and designed the hostel within its walls. Kiraly utca or King’s Street is the perfect location. A short walk to all the main Pest attractions. A straight shot down to the river to get to Buda. And in just the right place to access Budapest’s best nightlife and Ruin Pubs.

Behind the big wooden doors, you are greeted with a light and well-designed reception area that immediately flows into the bar and breakfast area. The staff are fun and helpful. Checking in is easy. If you have arrived early they have a luggage storage room so you can drop your stuff and head out and start exploring the city.

The Rooms

Choose from 8-bed, 6-bed, quad rooms or private twins or double rooms. Budapest is so affordable that if you don’t want to share you don’t have to. If you are traveling just girls, there is also the option to get a female only room. You will also notice from the photos that they are not skimping on space. Even with the biggest bag or a fully booked room you cannot get under each other’s feet. Although there is only one bathroom, there are mirrors in the room so you can still get ready while someone else is having a shower.

The Location

Kiraly is perfectly located in the middle of all of the main attractions. The only thing that is a little bit far away is the castle. But walking there is the perfect opportunity to see all the other attractions along the way and to wander back through the shops and cafes.

The Szechenyi Baths are an easy metro ride away too. And the area is now filled with great restaurants and Budapest’s famous Ruin Pubs.

Wombat’s started 20 years ago in Vienna and has continued to branch out from it’s Austrian origins into new locations.
